Is your Shopify store ready for AI shopping agents? A plain-English checklist
Last checked against Shopify, OpenAI and Google's own pages: October 17, 2026.
The short answer: an AI shopping tool like ChatGPT needs to do three things with your store: reach it, read it, and trust it. This checklist covers the seven things we check for that, plus one optional bonus. For each one: what it is, why it matters, and how to check it yourself.
It's short on purpose. Some audits list 30 or 80 items. These seven come straight from the rules Shopify, OpenAI and Google publish, and each one links to its source.

What "ready" means (and what it doesn't)
Ready means: nothing on your side is stopping AI tools from finding your products, understanding them, and sending shoppers to your checkout.
Ready doesn't mean: you'll be recommended. AI tools pick products for each shopper and each question. Shopify itself says being in its catalog "doesn't guarantee that a product will appear in a specific AI answer." (Shopify) Anyone who promises AI recommendations is guessing.
Why bother, then? Because the shoppers are there. ChatGPT has more than 1.2 billion weekly users (OpenAI). AI traffic to U.S. retail sites rose 693% in the 2025 holiday season (Adobe). And Adobe found the average U.S. retail product page was only about 66% readable by AI (Adobe). Being easy to read is a real head start.
The checklist
☐ 1. AI shopping bots can reach your store
What it is: AI tools send bots to read websites. The one that matters most for shopping is OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT's search bot. Your store can turn bots away in a file called robots.txt, or with a firewall or bot-blocking app.
Why it matters: OpenAI says sites that block OAI-SearchBot "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers." (OpenAI)
How to check: visit yourstore.com/robots.txt and look for the names of AI bots next to the word "Disallow." The robots.txt file doesn't tell you whether a firewall is stepping in, though. Our free check reads the file and loads your store the way OpenAI's bots identify themselves, to spot a "prove you're human" wall.
What we look at: OAI-SearchBot, OAI-AdsBot, GPTBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended.
Your choice, not scored: blocking only AI-training bots like GPTBot doesn't affect ChatGPT search, and OAI-AdsBot only visits pages submitted as ChatGPT ads. We show both in your report, but blocking them doesn't lower your score. (OpenAI)
☐ 2. Your product pages carry product data AI can read
What it is: behind each product page, there can be a small block of labelled facts called structured data (schema.org Product data): the name, price, currency, photo and so on. People never see it. Machines read it.
Why it matters: it's how Google and AI tools reliably read your price and details without guessing. Google's documentation explains what it uses. (Google) ChatGPT also picks products using "structured metadata... (e.g., price, product description)." (OpenAI)
How to check: paste one product page into Google's free Rich Results Test and look for a "Product" item. Our free check samples several product pages at once, and confirms each has a real price above $0 with a currency.
☐ 3. Your product details are complete
What it is: every product has a clear name, a real description, a photo, a brand, and a product ID (an SKU, GTIN or MPN).
Why it matters: Shopify says to keep product information "clear, complete, and up to date" so its catalog can understand it. (Shopify) Google's product data rules list these same basics. (Google Merchant Center)
How to check: look through a few products. Are any descriptions just a line or two? Any missing photos? Our free check samples your catalog and flags missing fields and very short descriptions.
Print-on-demand sellers, look closely at the brand. If it says Printify, Printful or another supplier instead of your shop's name, we flag it. ChatGPT ranks stores selling the same item partly on "whether they are the maker or primary seller." (OpenAI)
☐ 4. Your store policies are real pages
What it is: a refund or returns policy, a privacy policy, terms of service, and a shipping policy. Each one should be a page with real content, not a blank template.
Why it matters: Shopify requires completed Terms, Privacy and Return and refund policies to sell on ChatGPT. (Shopify) Shoppers who find you through AI have never heard of you, and policies are how they decide to trust you.
How to check: click each policy link in your footer and make sure it opens a full page. Our free check loads each one. Refund, privacy and terms are required. A missing shipping page shows as a warning.
☐ 5. Shopify's AI-channel basics look right
What it is: Shopify shares eligible stores' products with AI tools like ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot through Shopify Catalog and its "agentic storefronts." (Shopify)
Why it matters: to sell on ChatGPT through Shopify, your store must sell to U.S. customers, your products must qualify for Shopify Catalog, and your policies must be in place. (Shopify)
How to check: in your Shopify admin, Sales channels > Agentic shows whether your store is eligible, or the reason it isn't. (Shopify) From outside, our check confirms you're on Shopify, your required policies exist, and your store shows U.S. or USD signals. We can't see your admin switches, and we say so in the report.

☐ 6. A UCP profile (Google's newer agent checkout)
What it is: UCP, the Universal Commerce Protocol, is a newer open standard that lets AI agents discover what a store supports, such as checkout and payments. A store publishes a small profile at /.well-known/ucp. (Google)
Why it matters: Google says protocols like UCP "are emerging that will allow Search agents to do more." (Google) It's early days, so on Shopify stores a missing profile shows as a yellow warning, not a red fail.
How to check: visit yourstore.com/.well-known/ucp. If you see a page of data that mentions "ucp," you have one. Our check also confirms it includes the parts the standard requires.
☐ 7. ChatGPT shopping (ACP): shown, not scored
What it is: ACP, the Agentic Commerce Protocol, is how stores share products and checkout with ChatGPT. Shopify stores are connected through Shopify Catalog. Other stores can apply to OpenAI directly. (ChatGPT merchants, OpenAI)
Why it's not scored: nobody can see from outside whether a particular store is included. Rather than guess, we show it as "unknown" and leave it out of your score.
Bonus (not scored): llms.txt
What it is: a plain text file at /llms.txt that some AI tools may read as a summary of your site. (llmstxt.org)
Why it's only a bonus: Google says Google Search, including its AI features, doesn't use llms.txt, and having one "will neither harm nor help" you there. (Google) Shopify now gives every store a default one automatically. (Shopify) So we show it, but it never counts for or against you.
What no outside tool can check
We'd rather be upfront:
- Your Shopify admin settings, such as whether ChatGPT is switched on.
- Whether a product appears in a real AI answer. Answers change from shopper to shopper.
- What a firewall does with the real bots. We can copy a bot's name, not its network address.
Our report lists these under "can't be verified from outside," so you know exactly what was and wasn't tested.
How the score works
Your score out of 100 is a weighted average of the checks that apply to your store. Here's how much each one counts:
| Check | Counts for |
|---|---|
| AI bots can reach your store (GPTBot and OAI-AdsBot don't count) | 20 |
| Product data AI can read | 20 |
| Complete product details | 15 |
| Store policies | 15 |
| Shopify AI-channel basics | 10 |
| UCP profile | 10 |
| ChatGPT shopping (ACP) | not scored (can't be checked from outside) |
| llms.txt | not scored (bonus) |
A pass gets full points, a warning gets half, and a fail gets none. Checks we can't verify are left out instead of counted against you. A higher score means fewer things are in the way. It doesn't promise sales or recommendations.

FAQ
How do I know if my Shopify store is ready for AI shopping?
Look at six things: whether AI bots can reach your store, whether your product pages carry readable product data, whether your product details are complete, whether your policy pages are real, whether Shopify's AI-channel basics are in place, and whether you have a UCP profile. A seventh, ChatGPT's own inclusion, can't be seen from outside, so we show it without scoring it. Our free check runs all of them in about a minute.
Does Shopify make my store AI-ready automatically?
Partly. Shopify shares eligible stores' products with AI tools through Shopify Catalog, and Shopify says you don't need to do anything for ChatGPT to discover them. Your store still has to meet Shopify's requirements, and things like bot blockers, missing policies and thin product details are up to you. (Shopify)
Will a high score get my products recommended by ChatGPT?
No one can promise that. A high score means nothing on your side is blocking AI tools, measured against the rules Shopify, OpenAI and Google publish. AI tools still choose products for each shopper and each question. (OpenAI)
What is structured data, in plain English?
It's a hidden block of labelled facts on a product page (name, price, currency, photo, brand) that machines can read without guessing. Shoppers never see it. Google's free Rich Results Test will show whether a page has it. (Google)
Do I need an llms.txt file?
No. Google says it doesn't use llms.txt, and Shopify now adds a default one to every store anyway. We show it as an optional bonus and never score it. (Google, Shopify)
What is a UCP profile, and do I need one?
UCP (Universal Commerce Protocol) is a newer open standard that lets AI agents see what a store supports, such as checkout and payments. It's still early, so on Shopify a missing profile is a warning, not a fail. (Google)
Is the check free, and what do I get?
Yes. You get a pass or fail for all seven checks and your biggest quick win with its fix. The $19 Fix Kit has the exact fixes for everything else, with a 7-day money-back guarantee.
