Is your Shopify store showing up in ChatGPT shopping?
Last checked against Shopify's and OpenAI's own pages: October 17, 2026.
The short answer: for most Shopify stores, ChatGPT can already see your products. Shopify shares them for you through something called Shopify Catalog, and Shopify says you don't need to do anything. (Shopify)
But "automatic" has fine print. A few settings, a few missing pages, or a bot blocker you forgot about can keep a store out, or make it look worse than it is. This guide explains what those are in plain words, and how to check your own store in about a minute.
Why this matters now
People really are shopping this way:
- ChatGPT has more than 1.2 billion weekly users. (OpenAI, Oct 7, 2026)
- Shopify says AI-driven traffic and orders to Shopify stores tripled year over year in the second quarter of 2026. (Shopify Q2 2026 earnings call, transcript via The Motley Fool)
- Shoppers who arrived at U.S. retail sites from AI tools converted 42% better than other visitors in March 2026. (Adobe, Apr 16, 2026)
Shopify also says this traffic is still small next to normal sales. It's growing fast, though, and it's cheap to make sure you're not shut out.
How Shopify products get into ChatGPT
There are two separate doors. It helps to know both.
Door 1: Shopify Catalog. Shopify gathers product details from eligible stores (titles, descriptions, photos, prices, options, stock) into one big catalog. AI tools such as ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot can read it. If your store qualifies, you're in automatically. (Shopify Catalog, agentic storefronts)
Door 2: ChatGPT's own search crawler. OpenAI also visits websites with a bot called OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI says sites that block it "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers." (OpenAI) Shopify notes that AI tools can find products "through other means such as traditional web crawling," so this door matters too. (Shopify)
When a shopper buys, they check out on your own Shopify checkout, inside ChatGPT's in-app browser or in a new tab. (Shopify)
Shopify's own rules for selling on ChatGPT
Shopify lists these requirements. (Selling on ChatGPT, Catalog requirements)
- Your store sells to customers in the United States (it can be based anywhere).
- Your products are eligible for Shopify Catalog. Among other things, that means a title, at least one photo, a price above $0, and being published with a real product page. Products can't be unlisted or hidden from search engines.
- Your store is on the Starter plan or higher and isn't in private (password) mode.
- You've agreed to Shopify's agentic storefronts terms.
- Your Terms of service, Privacy policy, and Return and refund policy are filled in.
Some products are never shown, such as items in OpenAI's prohibited categories and B2B-only products. (Shopify)
Where to see your status: Shopify shows whether your store is eligible, or the reason it isn't, in your Shopify admin under Sales channels > Agentic. (Shopify) Only you can see that page. No outside tool can, including ours.
Five things that can still keep you out (or make you look worse)
Each of these lines up with a check in our report. For each one we explain what it is and why it matters. Our free check tells you which ones apply to you. For the full list, see our Shopify AI readiness checklist.
1. A missing or empty policy page
What it is: your refund, privacy or terms page doesn't exist, or it's a blank placeholder.
Why it matters: Shopify lists these three policies as a requirement for selling on ChatGPT. (Shopify) Shoppers who arrive from an AI answer also tend to check returns before they buy from a store they've never heard of.
How to check: open your store's footer and click each policy link. Our free check loads each page and confirms it has real content, not just a link.
2. The search bot is blocked
What it is: your store tells OAI-SearchBot to stay away, through a file called robots.txt or a "block AI bots" setting in an app.
Why it matters: OpenAI says blocked sites won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers. (OpenAI) Some store owners block "AI bots" to stop AI training, not knowing the search bot is a different bot. OpenAI treats them separately. (OpenAI)
How to check: our free check reads your robots.txt and tells you which AI bots it blocks. Blocking only GPTBot, OpenAI's AI-training bot, doesn't affect ChatGPT search, and our check doesn't count it against you.
3. A firewall or bot shield stops it at the door
What it is: security tools (a CDN firewall, an anti-bot app, a CAPTCHA) can show bots a "prove you're human" page instead of your store.
Why it matters: OpenAI recommends allowing its bots and its published IP addresses. (OpenAI) A bot that only ever sees a challenge page can't read your products.
How to check: our free check loads your homepage the way OpenAI's bots identify themselves and tells you if it hit a challenge. Honest caveat: we can copy the bot's name, not its real network address, so a firewall that checks addresses could treat the real bot differently.
4. Thin or confusing product details
What it is: short descriptions, missing photos, no brand, or no product ID (SKU, GTIN or MPN).
Why it matters: ChatGPT picks products using "structured metadata... (e.g., price, product description)." (OpenAI) Shopify says to keep product information "clear, complete, and up to date." (Shopify) Adobe found U.S. retail product pages were only about 66% readable by AI on average. (Adobe)
How to check: our free check samples your product pages and catalog and flags missing or weak fields.
5. Your brand field shows your supplier's name
What it is: common on print-on-demand stores. The product's brand (Shopify calls it "Vendor") says Printify or Printful instead of your shop's name.
Why it matters: when several stores sell the same item, ChatGPT ranks them partly on "whether they are the maker or primary seller." (OpenAI) A supplier's name in your brand field says someone else is the maker.
How to check: open any product page and look at the brand, or run the free check, which flags supplier names by name.
What nobody can check from outside
We'd rather tell you than let you guess:
- Whether ChatGPT is switched on for your store in Shopify admin. Only you can see that.
- Whether a specific product appears in a ChatGPT answer. ChatGPT chooses results for each shopper, based on their question and context. (OpenAI)
- Any guarantee. Shopify itself says being in its catalog "doesn't guarantee that a product will appear in a specific AI answer." (Shopify) No tool, ours included, can promise you'll be recommended.
What a check can do is make sure nothing on your side is quietly blocking you, measured against the rules Shopify, OpenAI and Google publish.
What it costs to sell on ChatGPT
Shopify says: "There are no fees associated with selling in ChatGPT. You pay only your standard payment processing fees." (Shopify) Fee terms can change, so check the Agentic section of your Shopify admin for anything that applies to you.
Check your store in about a minute
Paste your store's address. It's free, it takes about a minute, and you don't need to sign up.
Our free check looks at your store from the outside, the way AI shopping tools do:
- Product data on a sample of product pages (price, currency, photos, descriptions, brand, product IDs)
- AI bot access: robots.txt rules for OAI-SearchBot and other AI bots, plus a firewall test
- Store policies: refund, privacy, terms and shipping pages that really load
- Shopify signals and Google's newer UCP checkout profile
You get a pass or fail for every check, the source rule each check is based on, and your biggest quick win, free.

FAQ
Do I need to do anything to get my Shopify products into ChatGPT?
Usually not. Shopify says eligible stores are included through Shopify Catalog automatically, and ChatGPT is on by default. You still need to meet Shopify's requirements, like selling to the U.S. and having your refund, privacy and terms policies filled in. (Shopify)
Why don't my products show up when I ask ChatGPT?
There are a few common reasons: your store isn't eligible for Shopify Catalog (Shopify shows the reason in Sales channels > Agentic), a policy page is missing, the ChatGPT search bot is blocked, or ChatGPT simply picked other products for that question. ChatGPT chooses results for each shopper, so even a fully eligible store won't show up for every search. (Shopify, OpenAI)
Does it cost anything to sell on ChatGPT through Shopify?
Shopify says there are no fees for selling in ChatGPT beyond your normal payment processing fees. Check your Shopify admin for current terms. (Shopify)
What is OAI-SearchBot?
It's the bot OpenAI uses to find websites for ChatGPT's search features. OpenAI says sites that block it won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers. It's separate from GPTBot, which OpenAI uses for AI training. (OpenAI)
Do customers check out inside ChatGPT?
For Shopify stores, shoppers finish on your own Shopify checkout, opened inside ChatGPT's in-app browser or in a new tab. Your branding and payment methods still apply. (Shopify)
Can PassTheAgent guarantee my store will be recommended by ChatGPT?
No, and nobody honestly can. We check your store against the rules Shopify, OpenAI and Google publish, and link every check to its source. Passing means nothing on your side is blocking you. It doesn't promise a recommendation.
Is the check really free?
Yes. You get a pass or fail for every check plus your biggest quick win. If you want the exact fixes for everything else, the Fix Kit is $19 with a 7-day money-back guarantee.
